Let's put it straight. There is romance scattered all through all these books, mainly between Mandie and her childhood friend Joe Woodard. There is also some mutual competition between Joe and Mandie's other friends that are boys. It is a good series for readers ages 12+, is very long, and fun. The romance is just something to be aware of.  Also, Mandie does have a mind of her own and often does or says things without thinking.
